We are offering you the opportunity to acquire an emblematic and essential wagon from the French goods fleet: the Standard type refrigerating wagon from STEF!
The real model.
The Standard C or D type refrigerating wagons from STEF and its derivative Marcel Millet.
These wagons are well known to amateurs, they were produced in large numbers at the end of the Second World War by American manufacturers, but also by various French companies.
The first series were built from 1948 to 1951 and a complementary series will be put on the rails between 1957 and 1959.
More than 2000 Standard C and D type wagons were put into service.
These wagons have 2 doors per side as well as ladders at each end providing access to the hatches of the ice boxes.
The wooden walls with vertical friezes are lined with insulation.
The underside of the roof also has good insulation covered with a coated canvas to protect against bad weather.
The characteristic “Turbino” ventilators driven by the wind, mounted on the roof, allow the good circulation of the cold air in the whole of the wagon for the good conservation of the foodstuffs which they transport. They are refrigerated cars.
Different types of goods are transported by these wagons: early vegetables, fish, meat, fresh produce.
The various sub-series built belong either to Stef's own or to SNCF, which leased them to Stef.
All the wagons will carry and inaugurate the new image (for the time) of the Stef with the “new” initials Stef in large dark blue letters on the bottom of the body painted in white. They will know all the SNCF markings from the 1950s to the end of the 1970s, when the last units were reformed.
Marcel Millet, another company well known to railway enthusiasts, will own wagons with a similar appearance to the Stef Standard fridge.
Without being too mistaken, we can say that all types of SNCF motor vehicles, as well as many vehicles belonging to foreign networks, had one day the opportunity to pull at least one Stef Standard wagon, if not is an oar. This is the case from the era of steam to more modern electric locomotives during the times crossed.
Even the ABJ, X 2800, Picasso and many others type railcars had the opportunity to bring a standard refrigerant from the Stef to its hook!
They circulated throughout France, but also on many foreign networks.
The possibilities of circulation are great, these wagons circulate as well by train as by small cuts of 3, 4, 5 copies, or even alone according to the needs.
You can therefore have fun with one or more wagons, both on large traffic lines and on small country lines.
